Life

Ledentsow attended the Vologda Governorate High School for boys with graduation in 1860. This was followed by studies at the Moscow Academy of Practical Commercial Law , which he graduated in 1862 with distinction and award of Russian honorary citizenship. He married Serafima Nikolajewna Beloserowa from the old Vologda merchant family Belowerow.

1871–1887 Ledenzow was a member of the Vologda city duma and 1883–1887 head of the city of Vologda. Together with the pharmacist W. K. Ferrein ( Russian Владимир Карлович Феррейн ) he built the large pharmaceutical company WK Ferrein-Genossenschaft in Moscow .

With his will from 1905 Ledenzow donated his financial fortune for the society to be founded to promote the empirical sciences and their practical applications . Ledenzow's conception for this foundation differed significantly from that of Alfred Nobel for his Nobel Prizes . The foundation's capital was 3 million rubles (1909). The society had 295 real and honorary members, an annual budget of 94,000 rubles, nine specialist committees, a library and its own magazine.

Ledenzow died of pulmonary tuberculosis in Geneva. He was transferred to Vologda and buried in the Vvedensky cemetery.

After the October Revolution , the Ledenzow Society's foundation assets were confiscated in 1918 .

In 2002 the Ledenzow Society was re-established by Ledenzow's great-granddaughter ND Lukowzewa, JS Polinow and OW Lupaina as a foundation for the promotion of empirical science and its practical applications . All of the company's materials, including letters and bank documents, are in the Central Historical Archives in Moscow. The Vologda State Science and Mathematics Lyceum bears Ledenzov's name.
