Christoph Gertner von Gartenberg

Christoph Gertner von Gartenberg (* 1626 in Großbuch ; † January 13, 1689 ) was a German lawyer and language teacher for the King of Sweden.

Life

Christoph Gertner was born the son of the preacher Johann Gertner. He attended the humanistic Thomas School in Leipzig . Because of the unrest in the Thirty Years War , he studied philology with Valentin Thilo the Younger and Simon Dach at the Albertina Königsberg . He became a licentiate in law. He then gave a lecture on philological topics in Erfurt . He traveled to France, England and Holland. He was also a wage earner in the Spanish military for some time. He later worked as a language teacher for King Charles XI. of Sweden . From 1672 he was Royal Secretary of State and Councilor of Livonia . In 1677 he bought a manor in Livonia from the commercial director Roger Niederhos. An illness forced him to retire. The Swedish king worried about a pension and ennobled him.
