Christoph Ludwig Schwarzenau (born June 4, 1647 in Alsfeld , † December 10, 1722 in Gießen ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

The son of the rector and later preacher Andreas Schwarzenau and his wife Susanne Tonsor attended the school in his hometown and the pedagogy in Darmstadt . In 1664 he devoted himself to studying theology at the University of Gießen , where on October 13, 1667 he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy. In 1668 he moved to the University of Leipzig , where he attended the lectures by Hieronymus Kromayer , Johann Adam Schertzer , Elias Siegesmund Reinhard , Christian Thomasius and Friedrich Rappolt .

In 1671 he obtained the right to hold philosophical and philological lectures in Giessen. In 1673 he became inspector of the Itter convent , preacher in Vöhl and court preacher to the paraged Landgrave Georg III. from Hessen-Darmstadt to Itter. On May 26, 1685 he obtained a licentiate in theology and on September 7, 1686 he received his doctorate in theology in Giessen. After a request as a professor of oriental languages ​​in Gießen failed, he switched to teaching at the University of Marburg in 1695 . On September 10, 1715 he was appointed full professor of theology at the University of Gießen, which office he took up on June 9, 1716 and held until his death.

On May 27, 1673, he married Anna Rebecka († December 1, 1700 in Marburg), the daughter of the Swedish and later Hessian-Darmstadt lieutenant colonel Hans von Berghöfer. The marriage resulted in three sons and six daughters, of which two sons and four daughters survived the father. The children are known: Freiherr Kilian von Schwarzenau (* 1687; † November 17, 1764 in Gießen) became a doctor of law in Marburg in 1710, was a privy councilor and chancellor of the Hessian and Darmstadt district, as well as a curator of the University of Gießen and Johann Matthias von Schwarzenau (* September 2, 1693 in Vöhl; † Wiesbaden).

Schwarzenau wrote a number of dogmatic treatises, he also worked in the field of church history and dealt with Thomas Aquinas . In addition, he published several occasional sermons, which were not without value for the Hessian church conditions.
