George III from Hessen-Itter

George III von Hessen (born September 29, 1632 in Darmstadt ; † July 19, 1676 at Lauterbach court near Vöhl ) was the second son of Landgrave Georg II of Hessen-Darmstadt and his wife Sophie Eleonore von Sachsen (1609–1671).

Life

After the death of his father in 1661 he received from his brother Ludwig VI. as Paragium the Itter rule around Vöhl on the middle Eder in the former Ittergau in northern Hesse . Since parts of the Itter estate were pledged to third parties, Georg received an additional compensation of 1,500 guilders. At George's request, Landgrave Ludwig VI. on September 12, 1661, Vöhl became a market town with the right to hold three markets a year.

Georg resided alternately on the Lauterbach farm , where he had a castle surrounded by a moat , and in the old Vöhl Castle , which he had thoroughly renovated and converted in 1663. In Thalitter he built a mansion, the "Big House" . The income from the Itter rulership, which fell sharply due to the devastation of the Thirty Years War , combined with the high costs of building the palace and keeping the court, quickly brought Georg into financial distress, which his brother, at Georg's request, provided with an annual deposit of 4650 guilders in cash, 200 Mütte Korn, 600 Mütte Oats and 6 loads of wine had to soften.

Georg also wanted to expand Itterburg as a residence again, but died before the work was finished. Since he left no male heirs, his Paragium fell back to Hessen-Darmstadt. The court in Vöhl was dissolved. The home appliance was transported back in twelve four-horse wagons accompanied by a corporal with twelve men.

Marriages and children

  • After Dorothea's death, on July 21, 1667, he married Juliane Alexandrine von Leiningen-Heidesheim (* August 21, 1651, † April 1, 1703), daughter of Count Emich XII. from Leiningen . (After Georg's death she married Karl von Hessen-Wanfried .) Georg's marriage to Juliane Alexandrine had three daughters:
  1. Sofie Juliane (* July 17, 1668 - † August 9, 1668)
  2. Eleonore Dorothea (born August 15, 1669 in Vöhl, † September 4, 1714 in Darmstadt), unmarried
  3. Magdalene Sibylle (born October 14, 1671 in Vöhl, † April 21, 1720 in Bernstadt), unmarried
