from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl (Carl) von Hessen-Wanfried (born July 19, 1649 at Rheinfels Castle ; † March 3, 1711 in Langenschwalbach ) was Landgrave of Hessen-Wanfried . He was the second son of Landgrave Ernst von Hessen-Rheinfels-Rotenburg and Maria Eleonore von Solms-Lich.

Life

When Karl von Hessen-Rheinfels-Rotenburg received the former sub-Landgraviate of Hessen-Eschwege in 1676 after disputes over the estate in the " Rotenburger Quart " , he moved to Wanfried and thus founded the Catholic line Hessen-Wanfried. He expanded the Wanfrieder Castle into his residence, because the residential palace in Eschwege had been pledged to Braunschweig-Bevern since 1667 .

Karl was married to Sophie Magdalene, a daughter of Count Erich Adolf von Salm-Reifferscheid and his wife Magdalene. Sophie Magdalene died in 1675 on a trip to Venice. Karl then married Alexandrine Juliane, daughter of Count Enrico von Leiningen- Dagsburg and widow of Landgrave Georg III , on June 4, 1678 . from Hessen-Darmstadt-Itter . She died on April 19, 1703 and was buried in the family crypt on the Hülfensberg near Wanfried.

Death and heirs

Karl died in 1711 and was inherited as Landgrave of Hessen-Wanfried by his son Wilhelm. After his death in 1731, he was followed by his half-brother Christian, who died childless in 1755, thus ending the Hessen-Wanfried line established by his father.
