Christoph Niemann (born December 21, 1970 in Waiblingen ) is a German illustrator, graphic artist and (co-) author of various books.

Life

Niemann grew up in Ludwigsburg . He studied at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart . In 1997, Niemann moved to New York City . Eleven years later he returned to Germany with Lisa Zeitz and three sons and has lived in Berlin ever since.

His work has appeared on the covers of The New Yorker , Atlantic Monthly , The New York Times Magazine, and American Illustration , among others . Since 2008, Niemann has been writing and illustrating the New York Times Abstract City blog , which has been managed by the New York Times Magazine since 2011 under the title Abstract Sunday .

In 2012 he designed a stamp for Deutsche Post (MI no. 2932); in that year he also received the Sondermann Prize for comic art . His picture book Der Kartoffelkönig was nominated in 2014 for the German Youth Literature Prize in the non-fiction category.
