Christoph Richter (* 1957 in Bonn ) is a German cellist and music teacher .

Richter comes from a family of musicians and began playing the piano at the age of three and the cello at the age of five. From 1972 he studied at the Detmold Music Academy with André Navarra , and later with Pierre Fournier . From 1981 to 1988 he was first solo cellist in the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg. In 1986 he was a laureate of the Concours de Genève and the international Rostropovich competition in Paris. He also won the Prize of the City of Paris for the best interpretation of the work Per Slava for solo cello by Krzysztof Penderecki .

Of particular importance for his musical development was his acquaintance with the violinist Sándor Végh , who aroused his interest in chamber music. He plays in the Cherubini Quartet , founded the Boccherini Cello Duo with Xenia Jankovic and a string trio with Isabelle Faust and Thomas Riebl . A close relationship developed with András Schiff , with whom he plays sonatas, piano trios, quartets and quintets and in whose chamber orchestra Cappella Andrea Barca he has been the solo cellist since it was founded in 1999. Other chamber music partners include Heinz Holliger , Erich Höbarth , Alexander Lonquich , Dénes Várjon , Hariolf Schlichtig , Levon Chilingirian , Lars Anders Tomter , Tabea Zimmermann , Peter Csaba and Henning Kraggerud .

Richter has been a professor at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen since 1988 . He gives master classes all over Europe; In addition, he has been a permanent lecturer at the European Chamber Music Academy in Vienna, Zurich, Manchester and Paris since it was founded in 2004 . From 2004 to 2009 he played in the Heine Quartet , which he co-founded and with which he held a teaching position at the Guildhall School of Music in London. He regularly gave master classes at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he has been professor of cello since 2015.
