Christoph Schwöbel (born February 19, 1955 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German Protestant theologian and teaches as a professor of systematic theology at the University of St Andrews , Scotland.

Life

Christoph Schwöbel studied Protestant theology and philosophy in Bethel and Marburg , received his doctorate in Marburg in 1978 and completed his habilitation there in 1990.

Christoph Schwöbel was a lecturer in Systematic Theology at King's College London from 1986 to 1993 , where he founded the Research Institute in Systematic Theology (RIST) in 1988, of which he was director until 1993.

Subsequently he taught from 1993 to 1999 as a full professor for systematic theology at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel . This was followed by a professorship for systematic and ecumenical theology at the theological faculty of the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg from 1999 to 2004, where he was also director of the Ecumenical Institute. From October 2004 to July 2018 he was full professor for systematic theology at the Protestant theological faculty of the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen .

His focus is on fundamental theology and the philosophy of religion . In connection with the subject of creationism , Schwöbel attempted an epistemological analysis. He considers the juxtaposition of science and belief used by many ideological evolutionists in their confrontation with creationism to be self-uncritical, and points out that

"That the natural sciences themselves create their own relationships of authority, which are justified by the theory-laden character of the concept of experience and the fact that it works in theoretical paradigms that have absolutely authoritative status."

Schwöbel is also head of the Institute for Hermeneutics and Dialogue of Cultures.

He is a member of the scientific advisory board of the interdisciplinary research center Key Concepts in Interreligious Discourses (KCID) at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.

In September 2018, Schwöbel took over the Chair of Divinity at the University of St Andrews, established in 1643, in succession to the eminent English theologian Prof. John Webster .
