Christoph Sonntag (born January 28, 1654 in Weida ; † July 6, 1717 in Altdorf near Nuremberg ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian, professor at the University of Altdorf and poet of several hymns.

Sonntag studied at the University of Jena , where he received his master's degree in 1674. In the following year he got a job as a pastor in Oppurg . On the recommendation of Chancellor Veit Ludwig von Seckendorff , Sunday 1680 became superintendent in Schleusingen in the Zeitz part of the county of Henneberg . In 1690 he accepted the call to the University of Altdorf, where he became professor primarius for theology and antistes ( senior ) of the ministry of the clergy . During his tenure there he was four times rector of the university and eight times dean of the theological faculty. Mainly through his efforts, the academy received the imperial privilege in 1697 to undertake theological doctorates.

Sunday was seen as a representative of a mild Lutheran orthodoxy .
