Christoph Walther III

Christoph Walther (* 1550 in Dresden ; † May 11, 1592 ibid) was a German painter , carver and court organist . To distinguish it from other artists of the same name from this family, such as Christoph Walther I (sculptor, 1493–1546), Christoph Walther II (sculptor, 1534–1584) and Christoph Walther IV (sculptor, 1572–1626) he was named Christoph Walther III or Christoph Walther III. designated.

Life

Christoph Walther III came from a family of artists , he was the son of Hans Walther II . He grew up in the family's sculptor's workshop in Dresden's Terrassengasse 12 and learned the art of carving and painting. Initially, church motifs were his work and the color design of sculptural works. In addition, various wall and ceiling pictures with a natural look were created. In 1573 he received the citizenship of the city of Dresden. A little later he married the daughter of the painter Benedikt de Thola from Brescia . One of his daughters later married the carver Hans Stillingfrom Dresden. His studio was near the sculptor's workshop. In 1574 he became a member of the Dresden painters' guild (artist).

In addition to his work as a painter, he learned how to make music on an organ . In 1579 he was appointed court organist at the Saxon court. Now he moved into his own house and gave music lessons. At the instigation of Christoph Walther III, Elector August gave the organ builder Georg Kretschmar an order for a new organ for St. Marien Cathedral in Freiberg in 1587 . In Dresden Castle , he made wall and ceiling pictures in the castle tower . None of his works have survived over the centuries.
