Christophe Jaffrelot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christophe Jaffrelot (* 1964 ) is a French political scientist whose work focuses on the Indian subcontinent .

He graduated with a diploma and a Dr. habil. of the institut d'études politiques (IEP) in Paris and that of the Sorbonne and also graduated from the Institut national des langues et civilizations orientales (INALCO). He heads the Center d'études et de recherches internationales (CERI) and is Research Director at the CNRS .

Jaffrelot deals, among other things, with the modernization strategies of India , has written a sympathetic monograph on Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar , the leader of the "Untouchables" , and published a study on the ascendancy of the lower castes in northern India over the past decades .

He attributes unrest such as that after the division of the former British India in 1947 mainly to Hindu nationalist parties. Ever since the electoral policy existed in the former colony, they would mobilize Hindus against Muslims , provoke unrest and aim to divide the voters religiously. In an interview with the Nouvel Observateur , Jaffrelot interpreted the attacks on November 26, 2008 in Mumbai as a "call for justice" and an act of revenge for the unpunished Gujarat massacre in 2002, which claimed the lives of around 2,000 Muslims. So it is not a pan-Islamic jihadist movement.
