Christopher Dorner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christopher Jordan Dorner (born June 4, 1979 in New York City , † February 12, 2013 in Angelus Oaks , near Big Bear Lake ) was an American police officer in the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and former soldier in the United States Navy . He was suspected of killing four people in Southern California on February 3 and 7, 2013, including three police officers and the daughter of another.

On the run, Dorner was killed in a burning forest hut that was surrounded by the police. The hut had previously been shot at by the police; A deputy sheriff was apparently shot out of her during the half-hour shooting. The corpse in the hut could be identified by forensic medicine as the Dorners after two days .

Life

Childhood and youth

Dorner was born in New York State and grew up in Los Angeles County. He attended the John F. Kennedy High School in La Palma and the Cypress High School . He graduated from Southern Utah University with a degree in Political Science (minor in Psychology) in 2001 .

military service

Dorner served in the US armed forces. He was a holder of numerous medals (e.g. National Defense Service Medal and Iraq Campaign Medal ). Among other things, he had been specially trained on pistols and rifles.

Dismissed by the LAPD

Dorner was hired by the LAPD on February 7, 2005 and fired on September 4, 2008. He had accused a colleague of mistreating a mentally ill suspect. The victim's father and the victim himself confirmed Dorner's testimony, but a disciplinary committee found that Dorner had lied and prompted his dismissal without notice.

In his manifesto published on Facebook , he names this process as the main reason for the murders and threatened " unconventional and asymmetrical warfare " against the LAPD. He also denounced racism and corruption within the LAPD.

Dorner's bounty was last increased to $ 1 million.

In response to the series of murders, it was confirmed that the case that led to Dorner's release would be reopened.

Dorner died on February 12, 2013 in the San Bernardino National Forest , in a burned out forest cabin (34 ° 11′12 "N 116 ° 54′53" W) on 40612 River Road in Angelus Oaks , California . His stolen car was previously found on Highway 38 at the Glass Road junction of the South Fork Bridge on Big Bear Lake .

Police investigation mishaps

The police made some serious mistakes in their search for him. Two women who wanted to deliver newspapers were seriously injured by police shots, or fire was opened without warning on a driver who not only looks unlike Dorner, but also drove a vehicle of a different make and with a different paintwork.

Dispute over the reward

After he judged himself, various people and groups of people claimed the reward: a married couple who were overwhelmed by Dorner and whose vehicle he finally escaped, a man who identified him at a gas station, another who found Dorner's burning vehicle, and eight other people. Initially, the sponsors of the reward took the point of not paying the bounty because of the suicide. Eventually the LAPD awarded the couple $ 800,000 and the rest to the two men. This decision was contested in court.
