Christopher P. Jones

Christopher Prestige Jones (born August 21, 1940 ) is a British, Canadian and American classical philologist , ancient historian and epigraphist .

Life

Christopher P. Jones studied at Oxford University and graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Arts in Literae humaniores . At Harvard University he received his doctorate in Classical Philology (Ph. D.) in 1965 . He then taught from 1965 to 1992 as a professor of classical philology at the University of Toronto . In 1992 he accepted the chair for Classics and History at Harvard University, where he taught from 1997 until his retirement in 2010 as George Martin Lane Professor of the Classics and History . Guest professorships led him to the École normal supérieure de jeunes filles in Paris (1979), the École normal supérieure in Paris (1992), the Collège de France in Paris (2001), the Florentine department of the Istituto Italiano di Scienze Umane (in Florence the Istituto di Studi Umanistici, 2004) and the University of California, Berkeley (2010). He was a member and guest at the Institute for Advanced Study several times in various positions .

Jones' research interests are the social history of the Roman Empire , the Greek and Latin literature of the imperial era (especially Plutarch , Dion Chrysostom , Lucian , Philostratos , Apuleius ), the history of Hellenism , early Christianity , late antiquity and Greek epigraphy .

Jones is a member of numerous learned societies and institutions, including the Royal Society of Canada (1987), the German Archaeological Institute (corresponding since 1992), the American Philosophical Society (1996), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1998) and the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres (corresponding from 2011, foreign member since 2017).
