Chris Jones (guitarist)

Christopher Paul Jones (born November 11, 1958 in Reno , Nevada , † September 13, 2005 in Northeim , Germany ) was an American singer , musician , composer and guitarist .

biography

Jones started playing the guitar at the age of 5. A few years later, he decided to become a professional musician and at the age of 11 was accepted into a program to promote gifted children at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore , Maryland . There he discovered his early role model Johann Sebastian Bach , to whom he dedicated his composition Sonata in D. In 1972 he received the Young Composer of the Year award from the Conservatory's committee for this work . A little later Jones found his way to the blues and dealt with musicians such as Robert Johnson , James Taylor or Little Feat .

In 1976 Jones joined the United States Army and was stationed in Wiesbaden for three years . During this time he laid the foundation for his musical career in Europe. In the following decades he recorded records as an accompanist for singers such as Sara K. , Allan Taylor and Reinhard Mey . He also went on tour and in the studio as a solo artist and with the blues harp player Steve Baker .

In August 2005, Jones was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease , a malignant form of advanced-stage lymph gland cancer.

Like many American musicians, he had no health insurance and could not pay for hospital costs. Friends and musicians paid the costs. He died on September 13, 2005 in Northeim. On October 3rd, a memorial concert took place in Wolfenbüttel, at which many friends and music colleagues such as Abi Wallenstein , Marc Breitfelder and Steve Baker Jones paid their last respects. Artists such as Sara K. , Allan Taylor , Christian Willisohn , Werner Lämmerhirt , Paul Stephenson , Noel Shannon , Kieran Halpin , Steve Baker, Geraldine MacGowan , Brian O met for another benefit concert on October 25, 2005 in Ammerbuch (near Tübingen) 'Connor and others.

Jones' repertoire spanned many styles of music, including blues , country , folk and rock and roll . Many of his songs are difficult to assign to a particular genre. He also guitar workshops and played mostly on handmade Lakewood - acoustic guitars .
