Christos M. Joachimides

Christos M. Joachimides ( Greek Χρηστός Ιωακειμίδης Christós Joakimidis , * 1932 in Athens ; † December 11, 2017 ibid) was a Greek art historian . He worked mainly in Germany as a curator and exhibition maker.

Life

Joachimides fled to Germany from the effects of the Greek Civil War in 1952. He studied philosophy and literature at the University of Stuttgart, and from 1953 in Heidelberg art history and cultural sociology . Since 1958 he lived in West Berlin .

In 1957 he organized his first exhibition “Berlin Berlin - Young Berlin Painters and Sculptors” in Athens. He established his reputation as an exhibition organizer in 1977 with the Joseph Beuys retrospective “Directional Forces” in the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.

In 1981 he organized the exhibition "A new Spirit in Painting" with Norman Rosenthal and Nicholas Serota at the Royal Academy of Arts in London . The Zeitgeist exhibition in the Martin-Gropius-Bau followed in 1982 . In 1985 the “Zeitgeist Society for the Promotion of the Arts in Berlin”, which specializes in exhibitions in the Martin-Gropius-Bau, was founded. Joachimides was its general secretary. In Berlin he also organized “Metropolis” in 1991, “ American Art of the Twentieth Century ” in 1993 and “The Epoch of Modernity” in 1997. Art in the 20th Century ”.

Joachimides returned to Athens in 2003 with “Outlook”, an exhibition in the Benaki Museum on the occasion of the 2004 Olympic Games . Since then he has been commuting between the two cities.

Joachimidis was the editor of numerous art books.

In 1996 he was awarded a non-academic honorary professorship in Berlin.
