Christos Xanthopoulos-Palamas

Christos Xanthopoulos-Palamas ( Greek Χρήστος Ξανθόπουλος-Παλαμάς Chrístos Xanthópoulos-Palamás ; born November 21, 1904 in Mesolongi ; † January 7, 1977 in Vienna ) was a Greek politician and diplomat.

Life

Xanthopoulos-Palamas is a graduate of the University of Athens . In 1929 he joined the foreign service. After the end of the war and from 1931 he was delegated as legation secretary to the League of Nations in Geneva .

During the occupation of Greece from 1941 to 1944 he was excluded from the diplomatic corps. After the war he worked as a legation secretary in Paris and was part of the Greek delegation to the Paris Peace Conference in 1946 . This was followed by posts in the diplomatic service at the North Atlantic Council in Rome and at the Council of Europe . From 1954 to 1960 he was the permanent representative of the Greek government at the UN headquarters in New York City . After that he was director general of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs until 1962 . From 1962 to January 6, 1964 he was permanent representative of the Greek government to the North Atlantic Council . From December 31, 1963 to February 18, 1964 he was Greek Foreign Minister . During the Greek military dictatorship he was accredited as ambassador to Washington, DC from 1967 to 1970 .

From July 21, 1970 to September 11, 1972 he was Georgios Papadopoulos ' State Secretary in the Greek Foreign Ministry and Deputy Foreign Minister during the military dictatorship . During the Spyros Markezini government , he was Greek Foreign Minister from October 8, 1973 to November 25, 1973 .

Xanthopoulos-Palamas died in Vienna at the age of 72 and was buried in the First Cemetery of Athens .

He was the son of Angela and Xanthopoulos Palamas and the nephew of Kostis Palamas . He was married to Eleni Palamas-Xanthopoulou.
