The Christ Church is a listed building in the Potsdam district of Nauener Vorstadt , Behlertstrasse 9. It is the house of worship of the Evangelical Lutheran Christ Congregation of the Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church (SELK).

history

An old Lutheran congregation was formed in Potsdam from 1843 and met in rented rooms. After buying a plot of land on the corner of Behlertstrasse and Moltkestrasse (later Hebbelstrasse), she had a house built in the late Classicist style in 1865 , today's rectory, Hebbelstrasse 14. In December 1901, the community submitted a building application for a church building on the east side of the house, the was approved in July 1902. A. Grabkowsky and Sons received the contract to build it . The architect Georg Grabkowsky made the designs in the Potsdam family business of the father who gave it his name, court mason August Grabkowsky. The foundation stone was laid on August 24, 1902 and the consecration on October 25, 1903.

description

The church building, built in the neo-Gothic style, blends in with the building line of the adjacent residential buildings. The red brick building is triaxial with a slate-covered cross roof. The front side facing Behlertstrasse was designed as a tower facade. The bell tower in the middle part is designed as a double gable tower . It is crowned by a tapered roof turret and a final finial . The corner towers received conical roofs with finials. Pointed arched lancet triplet windows and pointed arched triplet windows illuminate the interior. The entrance area is emphasized by an eyelash . The arched field above the portal is decorated with a portrait of Christ with two Luther roses flanking it and the name “Evang.-Luth. Christ Church ”. The work was created by the painter Gerhard Haenisch (1871–1951). The rose window with filigree tracery , which is common in many Gothic churches , is a blind window with simple tracery . In the interior, this area is covered by the organ. Behind the acoustic windows designed as lancet triple windows are two steel bells donated by Empress Auguste Viktoria from the Bochum association . The smaller bell, with a diameter of 70 cm, bears the inscription " sola fide " and the larger bell, with a diameter of 83 cm, " Soli deo gloria ".

A star vault spans the church interior . The vaulted ribs , pillars and windows are accentuated by frames with yellow brick and dark paint. On the gallery above the south-facing entrance area “there is one of the few original pneumatic organs by Alexander Schuke ”. The instrument, built in 1903, has nine stops on a manual and pedal . The prospectus is designed in neo-Gothic forms. The polygonal apse is on the north side. The high standing crucifix on the wooden altar table was made in 1898 by the Berchtesgaden sculptor Zechmair. The wooden gospel desk erected in 1970 was created by Wilhelm Groß . The figures represent Maria and Johannes . The wall behind the altar shows a curtain painting that was formerly whitewashed and restored in 2015 under the pointed arched windows. The writing on the apse arch quotes the evangelist Matthew according to Luther : "Come to me all who are troublesome and burdened, I want to refresh you".
