The Christy Brown School is a school for the physically handicapped in Villingen-Schwenningen and at the same time the only school of its kind in the Schwarzwald-Baar district . It is named after the Irish writer Christy Brown , who himself had a physical disability.

history

Classes at the Christy Brown School began for nine students in the classrooms of the vocational school in St. Georgen in the Black Forest in 1980. The school was initiated by District Administrator Rainer Gutknecht . In 1986, 9 years later, the school got its own building in the city of Villingen-Schwenningen. In 1996 the capacity was reached and in 1997 the school received an extension. The school, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2006, has been designed as an all-day school . The school is named after the Irish author and painter Christy Brown , who himself lived with a physical disability.

In the 2005/2006 school year, 127 pupils are taught, most of whom come from the districts of Schwarzwald-Baar , Rottweil and Tuttlingen .

The school is sponsored by the Schwarzwald-Baar district , which means that the district is responsible for equipping the school and setting up the teaching staff . He is supported by the districts of Tuttlingen and Rottweil.

particularities

One of the special features of the Christy Brown School as a school for the physically handicapped is the commitment to physical education at this school. Since 1994 there has been an annual table tennis and polybat tournament in which almost half of all students take part. The school also has its own swimming pool with a lifting floor so that all students can take part in swimming lessons at least once a week.

20 students from the school took part in the filming of the Lake Constance crime scene What It Is Worth Living For 2015.
