Chrysophyllum januariense is an extinct species of the sapotaceae family. It was endemic to the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro .

features

Chrysophyllum januariense was a large tree with rust-red sepals. The leaves measured 6.8 to 11.6 × 3 to 5 centimeters. The leaf blade was elongated-lanceolate or elliptic-lanceolate. The tip of the leaf was pointed or tapered to the tip of the trickle. The leaf base was trimmed. The top of the leaf was almost hairless. The underside of the leaf was coarse-haired on the midrib, otherwise covered with rust-brown fuzz. The leaf nerve was brochidodromic, that is, the secondary leaf veins did not end at the leaf margin but were connected to a series of protruding arches. The midrib was indented on the upper side of the leaf. There were 9 to 13 pairs of parallel and straight secondary leaf veins. The petioles were 4 to 6 mm long and covered with rust-brown hair fluff. The flower clusters consisted of two to twelve flowers. The flower stalks were 4 to 5 mm long and hairy. The flowers were hermaphrodite. The four to five sepals were 2.25 to 2.5 mm long, broadly ovate, blunt or rounded at the tip, hairy on the outside and smooth on the inside. There were 5 stamens. The stamens were about 1 mm long and smooth. The anthers were about 1 mm long, broadly lanceolate, finely pointed and sparsely hairy. The hairy ovaries were narrowly ovate or conical, tapering to the stylus and had five pollen compartments. The stylus was 1 to 1.25 mm long and smooth. The stylus head was finely lobed. The habit of the fruit is not known. The flowering period was from January to February.

habitat

Chrysophyllum januariense was found in lowland rainforests on the coast of the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro.

status

Chrysophyllum januariense is known only from the collections of the French botanist Auguste François Marie Glaziou from the 19th century. The type specimen comes from the Laranjeiras rainforest in the state of Rio de Janeiro and was described in 1870. According to the current state of knowledge, the plant only occurred in the type locality and was no longer rediscovered during expeditions in the 20th century. In 1998 the IUCN added it to the list of extinct plant species. In 1972, a taxon was discovered near Linhares in Espírito Santo that looks very similar to Chrysophyllum januariense , but differs from the extinct form by its longer, thinner and more pointed sepals and by the longer corolla. Until the final clarification of the taxonomic status, the newly discovered taxon is known as Chrysophyllum aff. called januariense .
