August Wilhelm Eichler

August Wilhelm Eichler (born April 22, 1839 in Neukirchen , Kurhessen , † March 2, 1887 in Berlin ) was a German botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Eichler ".

Live and act

In 1869 Eichler was elected a member of the Leopoldina . On April 26, 1878, he took over the chair of botany at the University of Berlin and the management of the Royal Botanical Garden . In 1876 he received the Cothenius Medal of the Leopoldina. From 1880 he was a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and from 1884 a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . Eichler designed a system for classifying plants.

In 1885 Eichler was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

August Wilhelm Eichler died of leukemia in Berlin in 1887 at the age of 47 . He was buried in the Old Twelve Apostles Cemetery in Schöneberg . The grave has not been preserved.
