Cimetière des Rois
The Cimetière des Rois (German Cemetery of Kings ) or Cimetière de Plainpalais was a 15th century cemetery in the area of the Plainpalais community , founded in 1798 and part of the Swiss city of Geneva since 1931 . The name Cimetière des Rois is derived from the Rue des Rois ( Street of the Kings ), which runs past the main entrance to the east. The street name comes from the shooting kings of the Compagnie de l'Arquebuse shooting company , which had been practicing nearby since 1509.
history
The cemetery was first mentioned in 1482 and was laid out at the end of the 15th century outside the city walls for the deceased of the Hôpital des Pestiférés (hospital for plague victims ) founded nearby in 1469 . In 1487, the Notre-Dame de Miséricorde church was built for the plague house and the cemetery , which existed until 1776. With the dissolution of the suburban parishes during the Reformation in Switzerland , the Cimetière des Rois became the main cemetery of Geneva in 1536. Since 1883 it has only served as a burial place for prominent citizens of the city.
On November 22, 1951, the Geneva municipal council approved a loan for the construction of today's morgue. This was created under the direction of the Zurich- based architect Robert R. Barro, after the city architect Frédéric Gampert withdrew from the project after criticism and was completed on December 9, 1955 , according to the newspaper Tribune de Genève .
On the Cimetière des Rois lie the graves of the Geneva reformer Johannes Calvin , the co-founder and long-time President of the International Committee of the Red Cross Gustave Moynier , the Swiss cartographer and general Guillaume Henri Dufour , the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges , the Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera , the music teacher Émile Jaques-Dalcroze , the Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget , the Swiss composer Frank Martin , the Swiss conductor Ernest Ansermet , the Swiss writers Ludwig Hohl , Grisélidis Réal and Alice Rivaz , the Swiss publisher and diplomat François Lachenal , the German historian and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize Ludwig Quidde , the Swiss Federal President Adrien Lachenal , the Geneva City Council and President of the Pro Helvetia Cultural Foundation Paul Lachenal , and there is a memorial for the Austrian writer Robert Musi, who died in Geneva l .
