Paul Lachenal (born December 7, 1884 in Geneva , † March 10, 1955 , reformed , resident in Geneva) was a Swiss politician (FDP) and lawyer .

biography

Paul Lachenal was born on December 7, 1884 in Geneva as the son of Jean-François Lachenal and Louise Marie, born Gleckhner. He devoted himself to studying law at the University of Geneva , which he completed in 1906 with a licentiate (lic. Iur.). Subsequently, he completed an internship in the law firm of his uncle Adrien , after which he worked from 1908 to 1911 as a deputy to the Geneva public prosecutor and finally from 1912 as a lawyer .

In addition, the music lover was a founding member and president of the Orchester de la Suisse Romande . Lachenal also chaired the Pro Helvetia cultural foundation from 1940 to 1952 .

In late 1930 he headed the Friends of the Musée d'art et d'histoire (Geneva) . As a member and delegate of the International Committee for Safeguarding Spanish Art Treasures , founded in January 1939, he played an important role in securing the works of the Museo del Prado in the museum in Geneva during the Spanish Civil War . 174 paintings were exhibited in the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire (Geneva) in June, July and August 1939. The exhibition attracted more than 400,000 visitors.

Paul Lachenal, who was married to Elisabeth Alice Lachenal Jenny , died on March 10, 1955, four months after he had turned 70 in Geneva. He was buried in the Cemetery of the Kings , the Cimetière des Rois in Geneva, Plainspalais . Father of the lawyer and diplomat François Lachenal and grandfather of the painter Daniel Garbade-Lachenal , he was also the lawyer of Pablo Picasso and godfather of his son Paul, whom he brought to safety in Geneva during the Second World War .

Political career

Paul von Lachenal's political career, a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, began in 1914 when he was elected to the Geneva City Council ( legislative branch ), to which he was a member until 1922. To this end, he represented his party at cantonal level from 1916 to 1930 and 1936 to 1945 in the Geneva Grand Council , which he chaired in 1924, and from 1930 to 1936 as head of the Education Department in the State Council .
