Origin and meaning

The name Lachenal comes from the French noble family Lachenal from the Auvergne region. The family has been under the rule of Lachenal since the 16th century . Jacques Lachenal, Lord von Lachenal lived around 1531 . In the 17th century the family moved to Savoy , where they received confirmation of their nobility in 1697 . The nobility of this house is confirmed in the work of JB Rietstap " The Armorial General ". In France the name is most common, we also find ancestors with possessions in Piedmont , Italy. The Lachenal family owned many properties in Switzerland , one branch settled in Basel and the other in Geneva . Famous are Johann Jakob Lachenal (1708–1749), professor of anatomy and botany at the University of Basel, and the botanist Werner Lachenal (1736–1800). The Geneva branch included the statesman Adrien Lachenal , President of the Swiss Federal Council in 1901, the politician and philanthropist Paul Lachenal (1884–1955), President of the German-Polish Court of Arbitration (1927) and President of the Grand Council of Geneva.

The name comes from the name Chenal = irrigation canal .
