Wernhard "Werner" de Lachenal (born October 23, 1736 in Basel , † October 4, 1800 there ) was a Swiss anatomist and botanist .

Life

The son of the pharmacist Johann Jakob de Lachenal (1708–1749) and Maria Margaretha, b. Gottfried, broke off training as a pharmacist. He obtained a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Basel in 1755 and studied medicine at the Universities of Basel and Strasbourg . He completed practical training with the Württemberg court doctor and personal physician David Charles Emmanuel Berdot (1738–1780) in Mömpelgard . In 1763 de Lachenal was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . From then on he worked as a doctor in Basel. From 1776 to 1798 he was professor of anatomy and botany at the University of Basel, where he was rector in 1783/84 and 1795/96.

Lachenal redesigned the botanical garden and expanded the botanical library and the herbarium. He published on botany and was in correspondence with scholars at home and abroad, including Albrecht von Haller . From 1778 he was a member of the Helvetic Society .

Werner de Lachenal was married to Margaretha Passavant from 1763.
