The Ciobănesc Românesc de Bucovina is a breed of dogs from Southeast Europe recognized by the FCI ( group 2, section 2.2, standard 357 ), which belongs to the Romanian shepherd dogs . Romania and Serbia ( patronage ) are responsible for the standard .

Origin and history

Ciobănesc Românesc de Bucovina means translated Romanian shepherd dog of the Bukovina . According to the description in the breed standard, it is originally a natural breed from the Carpathian Mountains in the border area between Romania and Serbia and the area south of the Danube in Bulgaria. The Bukowina region, from which the breed name is derived, was particularly important for breeding. The Ciobănesc Românesc de Bucovina was bred there as a guard dog and guard dog. The breed was provisionally recognized by the FCI in 2009 with the standard number 357.

The Ciobănesc Românesc de Bucovina is a tall, formidable dog with a proud demeanor. Males are much heavier than females. The fur is short on the head and front of the legs, 6–9 cm long on the body, not curly, straight and rough. The undercoat is short, very dense and lighter than the top coat. The hair on the neck is longer than on the body and forms a mane. The forelegs are feathered , the Ciobănesc Românesc de Bucovina has trousers on the hind legs . The tail is bushy and hairy.

The classic color is white or white-beige with clearly defined gray, black or black and red spots. Flowing of the spots is rejected. Pure white, white-beige, ash-gray or black colors are permitted, but not desired.

The head is massive but not heavy, carried a little higher than the line of the back. The skull is slightly arched when viewed from the front and flat when viewed from the side. The stop is only slightly pronounced. The snout is the same length as the skull, well developed, never pointed, with a strong lower jaw. The lips are thick, heavily pigmented and close fitting. The eyes are comparatively small, almond-shaped and slanted, brown or a little lighter, but never yellow. The ears are set rather high, V-shaped, with a slightly rounded tip, close-fitting.

The Ciobănesc Românesc de Bucovina is described as balanced, calm and loyal. As a livestock guardian , he is brave and efficient in repelling predators such as bears, wolves and lynxes. He is suspicious of strangers. He is a good watchdog who independently guards the house and yard at night. As a family dog , it is only suitable to a limited extent.
