The iris ruthenica ( Iris ruthenica ) is a plant from the kind of irises ( Iris ) within the family of the Iridaceae (Iridaceae).

features

The Transylvanian grass iris is a perennial plant that reaches heights of 3 to 15 (25) centimeters. It forms a rhizome nest. The leaves measure 15 to 30 × 0.3 to 0.6 centimeters and are green. The 1 to 2 flowers are 3 to 4 centimeters in diameter, blue-violet or rarely white and fragrant. The perigon tube is 8 to 10 millimeters long. The bracts are edged greenish and pink. The hanging leaves are horizontal. The capsules have no edges and a round diameter.

The flowering period extends from May to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 84.

Occurrence

The Transylvanian grass iris occurs in Romania, eastern Europe, western and central Siberia, northern Mongolia, southwest, central and northern China and Korea. It grows in coniferous and mixed forests as well as subalpine herbaceous meadows. In the south of the distribution area it occurs up to an altitude of 3600 meters.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Iris ruthenica subsp. brevituba (Maxim.) Doronkin : It occurs from southern Siberia to Mongolia.
  • Iris ruthenica subsp. ruthenica : It occurs from Romania to Korea.

use

The Transylvanian grass iris is rarely used as an ornamental plant in borders and wooded edges. It has been in culture since 1804 at the latest.
