administration

The Adelaide City Council was established in Australia in 1840 as the first local government agency ever. Today it has twelve members: six Ward Councilors are elected by the residents of the three Wards (two each from North, Central and South Ward). These three districts are determined independently of the districts. The five area councilors as well as the council chairman and mayor are elected by all residents of the city. The Mayor of Adelaide City has held the title of Lord Mayor since 1919 . He is on an equal footing with the Mayors of the other LGAs in Adelaide, but takes on representative tasks for the entire city.
