Claas Compact is a series of self-propelled straw walker combine harvesters from the Westphalian agricultural machinery manufacturer Claas . The Compact 20 and 25 models were initially offered from 1970, followed by the larger Compact 30 in 1975 . The models differ in the width of the cutting unit and threshing unit as well as the engine. The series was designed for smaller businesses. More than 7000 Claas Compacts were built between 1970 and 1981.

technology

The compact combine harvesters are self-propelled combine harvesters that work according to the longitudinal flow threshing system with tangential threshing feed. The residual grain separation takes place with a conventional shaker system. The Compact does not have a driver's cab.

Cutting unit

The Compact 20 has a 1720 mm wide cutting unit. Cutting units with widths of 2100 mm and 2400 mm were available for the Compact 25 and 30; the 2100 mm cutting unit was standard equipment, while the larger cutting unit was subject to a surcharge. The cutting unit is passively adapted to uneven ground by means of springs. Its height can be hydraulically adjusted between −80 mm and 870 mm. Stalk dividers and crop lifters are attached as standard. The pick-up-type header reel has spring tines and is hydraulically adjustable in height; in the horizontal direction it can be moved mechanically in stages. The speed is fixed and cannot be adjusted.

Threshing mechanism and residual grain separation

The threshing drum of the Compact 20 is 850 mm wide, that of the Compact 25 and 30 is 960 mm wide. The diameter is uniformly 450 mm. The speed can be set in four stages using change gears. The concave surrounding the threshing drum has nine basket rails, and a stone trap is built in in front of it. Its distance to the drum can be adjusted from the driver's seat by adjusting the torque. For deburring, deburring flaps can be switched on, which are operated with a lever on the outside of the thresher. For the separation of residual grain, the Compact 20 has three rack shakers, the Compact 25 and 30 each have five. The area of the five rack shakers is 2.3 m 2 . The total separation area is given as 2.85 m 2 . The shakers run on two crankshafts with wooden bearings. Claas justifies the use of wood bearings with a longer shelf life. The straw is carried out of the back of the thresher and falls onto the field. A straw chopper was available as a special accessory for the diesel-powered Compact.

Cleaning and grain recovery

For cleaning, the Compact has an infinitely adjustable pressure wind blower that blows over an upper sieve designed as a lamellar sieve that can be adjusted for different types of fruit. Hill bars prevent the grain from slipping to one side on the top sieve. The lower sieves are exchangeable for the corresponding types of fruit. The screen area of the Compact 25 and 30 is 1.95 m 2 . The completely cleaned grain is conveyed with the elevator to the grain tank with distribution auger on the roof of the thresher, which on the Compact 20 has a capacity of 850 dm 3 , Compact 25 and 30 have larger grain tanks with 1100 dm 3 and 1900 dm 3 . The grain is overloaded with a grain-tight unloading pipe; On request, a bagging device attached to the discharge pipe was also available for the Compact.

drive

The Compact 20 is powered by a 1.2-liter Otto boxer engine ( VW industrial engine ) with 24 DIN PS (17.5 kW). The Compact 25 was initially powered by an upgraded VW engine with now 34 DIN HP (25 kW). Later, a 2.5-liter in-line four-cylinder diesel engine of the Perkins 4.154 type with an output of 45 DIN HP (33 kW) became the standard engine for the Compact 25; in combination with this engine, there was also the option of the wider cutting unit and the straw chopper . The Compact 30 received the same Perkins engine, but here the output was increased to 53 DIN HP (39 kW). Some Claas Compacts were also equipped with the 2-liter OM 615 engine of 31 kW. The gearbox on all machines is a three-speed gearbox with reverse gear, the driving speed can be continuously adjusted in the individual gears with a hydraulically controlled V-belt variator . Only the front wheels are driven. The tires are 11.5 / 80–15, the rear tires are 7–12. On request, 15 / 55-17 tires were also available for the front wheels.
