Claas Dominator is a combine harvester series from the agricultural machinery manufacturer Claas in Harsewinkel . Combine harvesters with the name Dominator have been sold in different series and generations since 1970, the first thresher in the Dominator series was the Dominator 80 in 1970. Models of the mega series built from 1993 onwards were sometimes given the surname Dominator.

history

The Dominator series was introduced in 1970 with the five-walker thresher Dominator 80, followed in 1971 by the six-walker thresher Dominator 100. At the time, designed as a combine harvester for large farms, at the end of the production period they were primarily in demand from small and medium-sized farms. For the first time, a hydrostatic drive and a driver's cab were offered on request . The Dominator 116 CS (cylinder system) followed in 1981. This no longer has shakers, but rollers that move the straw backwards. To better distinguish it from the original Dominator, this series was named Commandor from 1986 and was built until 1995.

The Dominator 80 and 100 models initially offered were replaced by the so-called 5 series from 1974, the new models were named 85 and 105. The 6-series followed in 1978, the designation changed accordingly to 86 and 106. The 6-series received a downward addition to the model range for the first time; the Dominator 56, 66 and 76 models were introduced. They have a smaller quadruple shaker and smaller motors. The Dominator 96 was placed between the classic 80s and 100s Dominator 86 and 106 models. Like the 106, it has a turbocharged 150 hp engine (110 kW) and is equipped with five rack shakers.

The 8 series followed in 1981. In the 8 series, the small Dominator 38 and 48 models were first introduced, and in 1982 the 58 and 68 models replaced their predecessors. These four models were built until 1987. The larger models from the Dominator 78 S to the Dominator 108 SL replaced the 6-series from 1985, and they in turn were replaced by the second generation of the 8-series. While production of the second generation of the 8 series for the Dominator 78 S ended in 1992, the other models were built until 1998. The VX models followed in 1998 and were built until 2000 and 2002 respectively. The smaller models of the 8 series were replaced in 1987 by the small S models of the 8 series. With the exception of the Dominator 38 S, whose production ended in 1994, the other threshers were built until 2003, the Dominator 68 S until 2004.

Claas sold the Drescher Dominator 130 and 150 from 2004 to 2011. They are located below the original Dominator 80 model, but are equipped with much more modern technology. The Dominator 140 was sold until 2014. The Dominator 40 Terra Trac is offered on the Indian market; it is based on the Crop Tiger , but has a conventional tangential threshing system with four rack shakers.

technology

All Dominator combine harvesters are self-propelled straw walker combines, with the exception of the Dominators with cylinder system , which are equipped with separating cylinders instead of tray shakers; they were renamed Commandor by Claas and split off from the Dominator series. They are therefore not addressed in the following section. Due to the variety of products and the technical similarity, the following section is limited to individual models, but not to the entire Dominator series.

The Dominator 80 has a cutting unit with a 4800 mm working width as standard, which automatically adapts to uneven ground. The cutting height is hydraulically adjustable between −200 mm and +1400 mm. The negative height allows the cutting unit to be set down on the ground, which simplifies changing the cutting unit. The height of the pick-up type reel is also infinitely variable hydraulically, and the adjustment forwards and backwards is gradual and mechanical. The reel also has an infinitely variable hydraulic speed adjustment facility and adjustable spring tines. Two adjustable, three-part stalk dividers are fitted to the cutting unit as standard and adapt to uneven ground. Other straw dividers were also available on request. The entire cutting unit is equipped with a cutting unit quick coupling for short set-up times. On request, cutting units with working widths of 3900 mm and 5100 mm as well as a four-row and a six-row maize picker were available for the Dominator 80. The intake channel is designed for different types of fruit and does not have to be converted when changing the cutting unit. A header trailer could also be ordered for the header.

The threshing drum with six beater bars has a diameter of 450 mm and a width of 1320 mm, it is hydraulically infinitely variable between 460 min −1 and 1500 min −1 . A stone trap, which can be opened from the driver's seat, is placed in front of the threshing drum. The concave with ten concave bars is equipped with torque adjustment, so its distance to the threshing drum can be adjusted for different types of fruit. The Dominator has a two-stage de-awning function: by activating the first de-awning stage, the concave is lengthened by three additional concave strips, the second stage increases the friction in the concave. Both the concave and the threshing drum can be removed from the front of the thresher for maintenance purposes without removing the threshing mechanism.

The residual grain separation takes place with five rack shakers, each with four drop levels. They have a shaker area of 5.15 m 2 and a total separation area of 5.95 m 2 . The sieves can be removed from the back of the thresher and can be set individually for different types of fruit. For threshing on slopes, the sieves have slope guides running along the direction of travel of the thresher, which prevent the threshed material to be cleaned from slipping sideways on the sieves. The entire screen box has a width of 1320 mm and a length of 2650 mm, the total screen area is 3.5 m 2 . The Dominator 80 has a two-stage barrel fan to build up the air flow required for cleaning. The returns auger trough and the grain auger can be folded down for cleaning. The cleaned grain is collected in a grain tank with a volume of 3.4 m 3 on the roof, behind the engine of the thresher. It is refueled with a whistle, it takes about 90 seconds to completely refuel.

In the Dominator 80, the engine is not installed behind the grain tank, but directly behind the driver's cab. The reason for this is the position of the threshing drum, which as a component with the highest power requirement does not have to be driven via a complicated belt drive. In 1970 an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine with 105 hp (77 kW) was initially installed as the engine, later a more powerful in-line six-cylinder diesel engine with direct injection of the 6.372.4 type from Perkins, which draws an output of 120 hp (88 kW) from 6.1 l. The OM 352 A from Mercedes-Benz was also available on request , also an in-line six-cylinder diesel engine. This engine with a displacement of 5.6 l has an exhaust gas turbocharger without a charge air cooler and develops 140 hp (103 kW) in the Dominator. All engines are water-cooled.

The drive power is transmitted from the engine to a three-speed transmission with a separate reverse gear. The driving speed is hydraulically adjustable via a V-belt variator between 1.5 and 19.1 km / h. A hydrostatic drive was offered as additional equipment for the first time. Only the front wheels are driven. Instead of the standard 18.4 / 15-30 AS tires, 23.1 / 18-26 AS tires were also available for the Dominator 80 on request, increasing the width in the transport position from 2790 mm to 2970 mm. The brake acts on the front wheels and is operated hydraulically. It can also be used as a single wheel brake, which increases the maneuverability of the thresher. It is steered with a hydrostatic steering . Headlights, rotating beacons, marker lights, reflectors, taillights, hazard warning lights and exterior mirrors are also standard. A driver's cab was also available on request.

The Dominator 58 has a cutting unit with a width of 3000 mm as standard, which has automatic ground adjustment by means of spiral springs and skids. The springs reduce the ground contact pressure to around 0.49 kN, so that the runners allow the cutting unit to slide smoothly over the ground. The cutting height is hydraulically adjustable between -84 mm and +864 mm. The standard equipment includes two three-part, adjustable, movably suspended stalk dividers, and the cutting unit has ten spring steel crop lifters and cuts the fruit with two mower knives. The distance between the cutter bar and the intake auger is 620 mm. This is to prevent stored grain from being drawn in before it is cut. The fingers of the intake auger can be adapted to different types of fruit, the inclined conveyor has three chains with screwed-on conveyor strips. The reel with controlled spring tines is six-part, its speed can be set between 12 min −1 and 48 min −1 with a V-belt variable speed drive. In addition, it can be adjusted hydraulically in height and mechanically in the horizontal. On request, a horizontal hydraulic reel adjustment was also built into the Dominator 58. Instead of the standard cutting unit, a cutting unit with a 3600 mm cutting width was also available for the Dominator 58, which is transported on a cutting unit carriage.

A stone trap is built in in front of the threshing drum, which can be emptied towards the front, it cannot be operated from the driver's cab to empty it, but no tools are required. The threshing drum has a diameter of 450 mm and a width of 1060 mm, it can be continuously adjusted between 650 min −1 and 1500 min −1 via a hydraulic control drive . The concave with twelve concave bars can be adjusted in its distance to the threshing drum from the driver's cab (torque adjustment). The two-stage de-awning is not operated from the driver's cab, but from outside the thresher with two levers, the concave is extended by two de-awning flaps. Inspection flaps are attached to the thresher for maintenance and cleaning of the concave and drum.

Horde shaker

The residual grain separation takes place with four tray shakers, which have four drop levels. The shakers have the dimensions 1060 mm × 3900 mm, the shaker area is almost 4.15 m 2 , the total separation area 4.80 m 2 . Tines are attached above the shakers. The separated grain first falls into return pockets and from there to the preparation floor. If the straw walker is blocked, the thresher driver is warned acoustically. The grain to be cleaned is distributed on the preparation floor, which secures the grain to prevent it from slipping sideways, and falls from there onto the upper sieve. The lighter chaff and straw remains are blown away by the barrel blower. The fan is continuously adjustable via a control drive. The threshed grain falls onto the lower lamellar sieve. The total screen area is 3 m 2 . The lamellar sieve and top sieve can be adjusted using bars for different fruit cakes. Deflectors ensure a balanced air flow, which should also ensure thorough sieving when driving on slopes. By shaking the sieves in opposite directions, a mass balance is achieved. Unthrown stalks are returned to the threshing drum with the returns. Both the grain and returns auger are accessible via cleaning flaps. The grain tank holds 27 hl of grain, which corresponds to a mass of 2.2 t of wheat. The grain tank is set up behind the driver's cab and is filled with a mechanically movable unloading whistle that is adjustable in height. This should be possible in "minutes".

The Dominator 58 is powered by a Perkins A4.248, an in-line four-cylinder diesel engine with direct injection and water cooling, which draws 63 kW of power from a displacement of around 4.1 l. The engine is built behind the grain tank. The engine can be serviced from a service platform on the roof of the Dominator. Its cooling air is sucked in through a cooler intake basket, which protects the cooler from the dust that is generated during threshing. The fuel tank has a capacity of 200 l. The propulsive power is transmitted from the engine to a mechanical three-speed gearbox with a separate reverse gear via a single-disc dry clutch . The driving speed is set hydraulically in the individual gears using a V-belt control drive. The thresher is braked with a hydraulically operated inner jaw brake that acts on the front wheels. It can also be used as a steering brake. The rear wheels are steered hydraulically. Instead of the standard tires, tires with a larger contact surface could also be ordered on request.

Optional display for throughput control

Other optional extras were either a sun canopy or a driver's cab (see picture in the info box on the right), a straw chopper and additional lights. In addition, an electronic function and throughput control was available for the Dominator 58.
