from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Claire Gmachl (* 1967 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian physicist who researches quantum cascade lasers , among other things . Since 2007 she has been a full professor at Princeton University in New Jersey (USA).

Life

Claire Gmachl completed a degree in physics at the University of Innsbruck . She wrote her diploma thesis in 1991 on the subject of nanostructuring of semiconductor surfaces using electron beam lithography . In 1996 she did her doctorate sub auspiciis at the Technical University of Vienna , the subject of the dissertation was frequency-tunable, surface-emitting semiconductor laser diodes with a vertical resonator .

From 1992 to 1994 she worked at the Technical University of Munich , and from 1995 to 1996 she was a university assistant at the Technical University of Vienna. As part of a PostDoctoral Fellowship, she worked from 1996 to 2003 at Lucent Technologies - Bell Laboratories in New Jersey (USA). She then moved to Princeton University , also located in New Jersey , where she taught as an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering from 2003 to 2007. Since 2007 she has been a full professor in Princeton and director of the Engineering Research Center MIRTHE ( Mid-InfraRed Technologies for Health and the environment ).

Awards

In 1995 she received the Christian Doppler Prize of the State of Salzburg for her scientific work . In 2002, she was named an Innovator Under 35 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Technology Review magazine . In 2004 she was named one of ten brilliant scientists under 40 by the US science magazine Popular Science . In 2005 she was a MacArthur Fellow .
