Claire Walka

Claire Walka (* 1978 in Stuttgart ) is a German author , director and film editor .

Education and career

After graduating from the Leibniz-Gymnasium Stuttgart-Feuerbach , Claire Walka studied visual communication with a focus on film at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach am Main and completed a semester abroad in the field of video design at the Facultat de Belles Arts, Universitat de Barcelona . In 2006 she completed her studies with a diploma. She has lived and worked in Hamburg since 2007. In 2008 she took part in the Berlinale Talent Campus and in 2013 in the writing workshop of the Jürgen Ponto Foundation.

Claire Walka writes short stories, scripts, experimental & lyrical texts and has made numerous short films, music videos and clips as a director and screenwriter. In her reading performances, she combines classic reading with audio & video clips.

Her greatest international successes to date were the short film “Promenade d'après-midi” (2005), which was shown at over 100 festivals worldwide, and the short documentary “Hotel Bellevue” (2014) about the history of a hotelier family and their house in Lauenburg / Elbe . The idea came to her in 2010 during her stay as a literature scholarship holder at the Künstlerhaus Lauenburg . The film premiered in October 2014 as part of the Nordic Film Days Lübeck and has since been shown at numerous festivals around the world, including the Noordelijk Film Festival Leeuwarden in the Netherlands, the IMA Film Festival, Thrissur in Kerala , India at the iChill Manila Film Festival in the Philippines at the MICA Film Festival, Manaus , Brazil where the film was awarded the “Best Short Doc” prize, at the Schleswig-Holstein Film Festival in Kiel, at the Multiverse Film Festival in New York and at the Royal Film Festival Benton, Arkansas and at Festival Cine es Cena in La Laguna, Tenerife.

In September 2015, the Künstlerhaus Lauenburg dedicated a first retrospective to Claire Walka with videos, animations, clips, shorts and documentaries from 2002 to 2014.
