Stumbling block

Clara Caroline Schachne (born June 9, 1858 in Meseritz , † October 4, 1942 in Theresienstadt ) was a German writer and journalist.

Life

Clara Caroline Schachne was born as the daughter of the Jewish wool merchant Joseph Hirsch and his wife Cerline (Lina) Schachne in Meseritz ( Province of Posen ). In 1881 she came to Leipzig, where she worked as a writer and journalist.

Schachne wrote numerous fairy tale, children's and youth books under the pseudonym Clara Schott , the maiden name of her mother. As a journalist, she wrote essays, short stories, sketches and fashion reports for various newspapers and magazines. At the end of the 19th century, however, Schachne also published a book with the provocative title “On the question of men” at the time.

In 1933 their books were removed from the German libraries and were no longer allowed to be published. In Leipzig she ended up living in the Israelite old people's home. On September 19, 1942, Clara Caroline Schachne was deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp , where she died two weeks later at the age of 85.

In 2007, on the initiative of the German library Clara Caroline Schachne, a thought was given when a stumbling block was laid in the pavement in front of her last house at Paul-List-Strasse 13 in Leipzig .
