Clark Wissler

Clark Wissler , actually Clark David Wissler (born September 18, 1870 in Cambridge City , Wayne County , Indiana , USA , † August 25, 1947 in New York City , USA) was an American anthropologist , psychologist and museum ethnologist . He coined the term " cultural area " within diffusionism in ethnology and was an important researcher of the North American Indians .

Life

Clark Wissler was born to Benjamin and Sylvana Wissler in 1870 on a farm near Cambridge City, Indiana, USA.

First he was a student of psychology at Indiana University and made his bachelor's degree in 1897 and his master's degree in 1899. He later continued his studies at Columbia University , where he did his doctorate in psychology in 1901. Later he was also interested in anthropology and attended courses the world-famous ethnologist Franz Boas .

In 1902 he was assistant for ethnology at the American Museum of Natural History under the direction of Franz Boas. From 1903 to 1909 he taught anthropology at Columbia University. From 1906 to 1941 he was also curator of the Ethnological Department of the American Museum of Natural History. In 1920 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1924 to the American Philosophical Society and in 1929 to the National Academy of Sciences . From 1924 to 1940 he was a professor at Yale University, initially for psychology , from 1931 for anthropology. He died in New York on August 25, 1947.

Clark Wissler is still considered to be one of the pioneers of Indian research in the USA. Much of what is known today about the North American Indian tribes comes from the research of Wissler. He also coined the term "cultural area" in ethnology and was one of the leading supporters of diffusionism within his discipline.
