Claude Gillingwater (around 1900)

Claude Beton Gillingwater senior (born August 2, 1870 in Louisiana , Missouri , † November 1, 1939 in Beverly Hills , California ) was an American actor .

Career and life

The 1.88 meter tall Gillingwater first studied law like his father, but dropped out. He then became a merchant and traded in vinegar, among other things. In addition, he played theater for David Belasco for decades . The silent film star Mary Pickford discovered Gillingwater and hired him in 1920 for the role of Earl of Dorincourt in her film The Little Lord . Gillingwater became a successful silent film actor through this role. In 1923 he starred in Three Wise Fools with Eleanor Boardman ; and in the film Wages for Wives he played the father of Jacqueline Logan . Mostly Gillingwater embodied the rich, but rather grumpy or depressed older gentleman. Even after the silent film era, Gillingwater remained in supporting roles on the screen. In the lavish Dickens film Escape from Paris (1935) with Ronald Colman , Elizabeth Allan and Basil Rathbone , he played a banker and in The Prisoner of Shark Island (1936) he was seen as the chief of police. In the same year he had a serious accident while shooting the film Mysterious Passengers , when he fell off a platform in the studio. Gillingwater could only partially recover from the injuries, but continued to make films, such as Maria Walewska (1938) with Greta Garbo .

Gillingwater's wife, Carlyn, had died of a heart attack in 1937. On November 1, 1939, 69-year-old Gillingwater was found dead in an armchair in his house by a servant. Suicide was given as the cause of death . The reasons for this are said to have been the never overcome death of his wife or his health problems. He had a son, Claude Gillingwater Jr. (1911-1996), who also became an actor. Gillingwater was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Celebrities Cemetery in Glendale .
