Claude Godbillon
Claude Godbillon (born February 21, 1937 in Écueil ; † June 8, 1990 ) was a French mathematician who dealt with differential geometry and its application in mechanics and with algebraic topology .
Godbillon received his doctorate on scrolling under Georges Reeb at the University of Strasbourg in 1967 (Feuilletages ayant la propriété du prolongement des homotopies). He became a professor in Strasbourg at the IRMA (Institut de Recherche Mathématique Avancée) and in 1972 he became director of the IRMA. At times he was Vice President of the University of Strasbourg.
With Jacques Vey (1943–1979) he introduced the topological Godbillon-Vey invariant of foliage in 1971 .
He wrote several textbooks, including one on differential geometry in analytical mechanics, where he insisted on not using graphics like Joseph-Louis Lagrange in his Mecanique analytique of 1788.
He was President of the French Mathematical Society and advisor to the Ministry of Education on matters of mathematics. In 1976 he was President of the Société Mathématique de France .
