Claude-Marie Meunier (born August 4, 1770 in Saint-Amour , † April 14, 1846 in Paris ) was a French Général de division of the infantry .

Life

Meunier comes from a humble background and was enthusiastic about the theories of Jean-Jacques Rousseau at an early age .

In 1792 he joined the 35 e régiment d'infanterie as a cadet and also took part in some fights; first in the Armée du Rhin with whom he served in the defense of Mainz in 1793 , later in the Armée d'Italie . In 1798 he was captain and at the beginning of 1810 he was already général de brigade .

On March 25, 1805, Meunier married Laure David, the daughter of the painter Jacques-Louis David , who also portrayed him in 1812. One of Meunier's sons later became mayor of Lille .

Meunier fought in the Napoleonic Wars on the Iberian Peninsula and in 1812 accompanied Napoleon on his Russian campaign . There he was wounded, but was able to save himself back to France.

After Napoleon's abdication, Meunier joined the Bourbons and was therefore during the Restoration of King Louis XVIII. appointed as military commander of Poitiers .

Claude-Marie Meunier died on April 14, 1846 in Paris at the age of 75 and found his final resting place in the Père Lachaise cemetery near the grave of his father-in-law. A few weeks before his death, he saw his memoirs published.
