Claudia Huerkamp

Claudia Huerkamp , b. Claudia Schrage (born February 18, 1952 in Münster ; † December 5, 1999 in Gütersloh ) was a German historian .

Life

Claudia Huerkamp studied history and Russian at the University of Münster from 1970 to 1976 after graduating from high school . Their state work was entitled “The elementary school teachers in Prussia 1848–1914. Aspects of their development as a social group ”.

Since 1976 she worked at the University of Bielefeld . There she was a member of a research group at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) and worked on the subject of law and the development of large companies in an international comparison under the direction of the social historian Jürgen Kocka .

From 1979 to 1983 Huerkamp did research for her dissertation, which was entitled “From the learned state to the professional expert. Studies on the social history of doctors in Prussia in the 19th and early 20th centuries ”was published. She was looked after by Jürgen Kocka. This was followed by a research project financed by the Volkswagen Foundation on the subject of “Doctors in Germany and England. Similarities and differences in their professionalization process in comparison ”.

From 1986 to 1990 Huerkamp was a research assistant at the chair for history of the 19th and 20th centuries with Hans-Ulrich Wehler . In the same position she worked in the special research area “Social History of the Modern Bourgeoisie”. In 1995 the habilitation for the subject of modern history took place . On the subject of her habilitation thesis she had “Bildungsbürgerinnen. Women in Universities and Academic Professions, 1900–1945 ”elected. She then worked for two years on the project "Female students and academics from 1945 to the late 1970s" funded by the German Research Foundation. "

Huerkamp was most recently a private lecturer at the Faculty of History and Philosophy at Bielefeld University. The last years of her life were marked by a serious illness.

Honors

In 2014, the award announced by the Faculty of History, Philosophy and Theology at Bielefeld University for a graduate with an excellent thesis was named the Claudia Huerkamp Prize.
