academic career

Claudia Koch-Brandt studied chemistry and pharmacy at the University of Frankfurt am Main from 1970 to 1975 . After the pharmaceutical state examination ( approval ) in 1976 it was 1980 when biochemist Hugo Fasold in the Department of Biochemistry, Pharmacy and Food Chemistry for Dr. rer. nat. PhD.

She was then a postdoctoral fellow (scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation ) and staff scientist at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. In 1985 she qualified as a professor at the Institute for Biochemistry at the University of Frankfurt. She then managed the professorship for molecular genetics and in 1989 became a university professor for biochemistry.

Since 1991 she has been a professor at the Institute for Pharmacy and Biochemistry at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . Her research focus is on the elucidation of cellular protective mechanisms in degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's , Parkinson's and arteriosclerosis . Since 1996 she has also been a member of the coordination committee of the Natural Science-Medical Research Center (NMFZ) in Mainz. In 2001 she founded and has since coordinated the PhD Student Exchange Program with the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, which is funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation and the Klaus Tschira Foundation (Heidelberg). From 2005 to 2011 she was a juror for the John Kendrew Award of EMBL and since 2010 of the Klaus Tschira Prize for Understandable Science. In Mainz she has been the contact person for the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology since 2010 .

Since 1982 Claudia Koch-Brandt has published over 50 specialist articles in international journals (initially under her name from her first marriage, Claudia Kondor-Koch), u. a. in Advances in Cancer Research , Biochemical Journal , Cell , Experimental Cell Research , FEBS Letters , Journal of Biological Chemistry , Journal Cell Biology , Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis , PLOS ONE , Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and The EMBO Journal ; their h-index is 22 (as of March 10, 2014). She is also a reviewer for the magazine Fachbuchjournal (published by Dinges & Frick).
