Claus Thomsen (born May 31, 1970 in Aarhus ) is a former Danish football player . The defender was used primarily as a central defender.

Career

Thomsen started his professional career in his hometown with Aarhus GF in the Danish top division. With Aarhus he won the Danish Football Cup in 1992 with a 3-0 final win against B 1903 Copenhagen . Through his achievements different European clubs became aware of him; a move to Celtic Glasgow failed. In 1994 Thomsen moved to England to Ipswich Town , later to Everton FC in the Premier League . In 1998 he moved to AB Copenhagen in Denmark for half a year . His last professional position was VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga . After a series of injuries, he retired in 2002.

National team

Thomsen played in Denmark's youth teams. With the U-21 he took part in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , he was the captain of his selection. In 1995 he made his debut in the national team A-1996 and took under coach Richard Møller Nielsen in the European part. Thomsen was used in all three games and could not prevent the end in the group stage.
