Cleistocactus sulcifer is a species of plant in the genus Cleistocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet sulcifer means 'bearing furrows'.

description

Cleistocactus sulcifer grows shrubby with few branched, prostrate to ascending shoots and reaches lengths of 1 to 2 meters with diameters of 2.5 to 5 centimeters. There are 8 to 12 transversely furrowed ribs , which are divided into elongated hexagonal fields. The areoles on it are about 1 centimeter apart. The 5 to 15 thorns are brown to gray and have a brown tip. The central spine, which can be missing, rarely two are present, is sub-like, protruding and 1 to 5 centimeters long. The awl to needle-like radial spines are 5 to 10 millimeters long.

The tubular to funnel-shaped, crooked, red to salmon-red flowers appear laterally and are very variable. They are about 5 to 9.5 centimeters long and 3 to 6 centimeters in diameter. Your pericarpel is dense and long white to brown, the flower tube loosely covered with white to brown wool. The spherical, greenish fruits are scaled and hairy. They reach a diameter of about 1 centimeter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Cleistocactus sulcifer is common in the Peruvian regions of La Libertad , Ancash and Lima at altitudes of 2400 to 3000 meters. It was first described as Loxanthocereus sulcifer in 1957 by Werner Rauh and Curt Backeberg . Beat Ernst Leuenberger placed them in the genus Cleistocactus in 2002 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
