Clemens Kissel
Clemens Kissel (born May 3, 1849 in Mainz , † December 25, 1911 there ) was a German engraver , draftsman and writer in Mainz.
Life
He was the eldest son of the Mainz engraver Heinrich Emil Kissel , who lived in the Mittlere Bleiche house . As a 17-year-old he probably took an active part in the German War . He first learned the craft of chemigrapher from his father and thus the production of printing plates . Afterwards he was a student of Joseph Boudin at the Mainz trade school.
Since 1887 he ran his “court art institute for zinc etching ” at Zanggasse 13 , and had his private apartment at Gärtnergasse 22. Among other things, he was known for his artistic ex-libris and coats of arms.
Kissel was and is considered an extremely talented and versatile artist of the 19th century. In 1875, when he was only 27 years old, he was commissioned by the Mainz Cathedral Chapter to make the second large astronomical clock of the priest mechanic Alexius Johann in the episcopal palace , damaged by the powder tower explosion on November 18, 1857, functional again, which he also succeeded with with the help of watchmakers . In the Mainzer Tagblatt of January 18, 1876 and in the Mainzer Journal of May 23, 1876 he reported in detail about this watch.
His artistic versatility is also evident from the fact that he even designed the first two uniforms for the Mainz Prinzengarde in 1883 and 1888 - similar in cut and color to the outfit of the Electoral Mainz fusiliers of the late 18th century. In 1893 he designed the third uniform in the style of the Wallenstein riders.
