Cliff Adams (born August 21, 1923 in Southwark , London , England , † October 22, 2001 in Chelsea , Kensington and Chelsea , London, England) was a British orchestra conductor , singer and radio host .
Life
When he was nine years old he was a choirboy at St Mary le Bow's Church in Cheapside . The organist gave him piano and organ lessons so that at the age of 16 he could take part as a pianist in a big band. Because of his musical skills, he came to Uxbridge , the headquarters of the RAF Music Services, after the outbreak of World War II .
In the post-war years he wrote and arranged for many then popular performers, such as Ambrose , Ted Heath , Cyril Stapleton and Eric Winstone . Adams co-founded the singing group The Stargazers with Dick James , which had two number one hits in Britain in the early 1950s. He invented and introduced in 1959, after the dissolution of Stargazers, the "Sing Something Simple" show at the BBC - radio . The program turned out to be one of the longest-lived in radio history worldwide: after four decades, it could still be heard on BBC Radio2 every Sunday at the same slot.
He had his own orchestra and singing combo, the Cliff Adams Singers . The Cliff Adams Orchestra had a hit in the British charts : "The Lonely Man Theme" was the tune of a commercial for a cigarette brand and came in at number 39 in 1960. Adams later founded and ran Olympic Studios , a music studio in London. He also built up an art collection, primarily with works by British artists from the first half of the 20th century. As a music entrepreneur, he also tried his hand at West End Musicals in 1976 , producing a two-act Liza of Lambeth show at the Shaftesbury Theater.
Cliff Adams lived in Chelsea . He was married a total of three times and had two daughters and a son.
