Clifford George Evans (born February 17, 1912 in Senghenydd , Wales , United Kingdom , † June 9, 1985 in Shropshire ) was a British actor .

Life

Born in a Welsh village north of the capital Cardiff , Evans attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London as a teenager and made his debut in 1930 in the play 'The Witch'. Clifford Evans then went on tour and appeared in plays such as 'The Distaff Side' (1934), 'Hamlet' (1936) and 'Ghosts' (1937) since September 1934. The strong, tall and in his (later film) roles mostly determined and grim-looking actor made a name for himself on stage with Shakespeare performances in particular, but also appeared in plays by other English-speaking authors (such as George Bernard Shaw's 'The Doctor's Dilemma') with.

Regularly present in film since the mid-1930s, Evans was made to play mostly tough, hard-boiled types, including rough police inspectors such as in the Eddie Constantine flick " Thick Air and Hot Love ". With his Quaker William Penn in the historical drama "The Governor of Pennsylvania" Evans had received his most famous and complex film lead role at the beginning of 1941.
