Clifton , nicknamed the Norwegian Capitol of Texas , is a city in Bosque County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located on the Bosque River in the south of the county, a little east of the geographic center of Texas and has a total area of 5 km² without any significant water surface.
history
In the winter of 1852/53 several settlers settled in this area and named the place Cliff Town after the limestone walls that surrounded it (English: Limestone Cliffs). Over the years the name changed to Clifton. A post office was set up in 1859 and the first church was built in 1861.
In 1880, the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway moved their tracks south of Clifton and built a station, causing businessmen and traders to move closer to the station. In the following years, the whole city shifted. Between 1890 and 1892, Clifton was also the county seat .
The nickname Norwegian Capital of Texas was given to Clifton and the surrounding area because it was almost exclusively inhabited by Norwegians and Germans in the mid- 19th century .
