Clintonia borealis is a plant from the family of the lily family (Liliaceae). It is widespread in northeastern North America and is called "Blue bead-lily", "Yellow clintonia" or "Corn lily" there.

description

Clintonia borealis is a herbaceous plant that forms clumps of thin rhizomes and reaches a height of 20 to 50 centimeters. The two to four stalked leaves are oblong-round to elliptical obovate, 15 to 30 centimeters long and 5 to 10 centimeters wide with a glossy dark green blade .

Flowering time is from the beginning of May to the beginning of July. The racemous inflorescences are short, terminal and have three to eight, rarely up to ten flowers . The one to rarely three bracts are narrow leaf-like. The nodding flowers have yellow to yellowish-green, narrow, oblong-round bracts that are 12 to 16 millimeters long and 3.5 to 4.5 millimeters wide. The stamens are 12 to 17.5 millimeters long, the elongated-round anthers are 2 to 3.5 millimeters long.

The fruits are egg-shaped, ultramarine-blue, 8 to 12 millimeters long berries . They contain 8 to 16 seeds that are 3 to 5 millimeters long.

The chromosome numbers are 2n = 28 and 32, respectively.

distribution

The type is found in northeastern North America (Canada, USA) from the east coast to Minnesota in the west of Newfoundland in the north to Pennsylvania to the south, and additionally from Southern Pennsylvania from within a narrow corridor along the border between West Virginia and Virginia respectively Tennessee and North Carolina . It inhabits dense coniferous, mixed and deciduous forests at altitudes between 0 and 1600 meters.

Systematics and botanical history

The species was first described in 1789 by William Aiton as Dracaena borealis , in 1832 Constantine Samuel Rafinesque placed it in the genus Clintonia, which he first described in 1818 . The generic name honors DeWitt Clinton , multiple governor of New York, the species epithet refers to the northern distribution.
