Clostridium pasteurianum (formerly Clostridium pastorianum ) is an anaerobic rod- shaped bacterium thatis capable of fixing nitrogen withoutentering intoa symbiosis . It was discovered in 1890 by the Russian microbiologist Sergei Nikolajewitsch Winogradski . It is a thermoduric , saccharolytic microorganism that can spoil apple juice.

Biotechnical importance

Clostridium pasteurianum is able to ferment glycerol . The resulting product is n-butanol , but 1,3-propanediol , ethanol and acetic acid are also produced . In Furthermore, C. pasteurianum for hydrogen production are used.
