Clown Alley was an American crossover band from San Francisco that was formed in 1985 and disbanded in 1987. During their career the band played with groups like Broken Bones , Corrosion of Conformity and English Dogs .
history
The band was formed in 1985 and consisted of singer David Duran, guitarist Mark Deutrom, bassist Lori "Lorax" Black (daughter of Shirley Temple ) and drummer Justin Clayton. After the band had developed enough songs, the first and only album Circus of Chaos was released in 1986 on Deutrom's label Alchemy Records . The album was the label's first release. In 1987 the band broke up again. After the breakup, Deutrom and Black played intermittently at The Melvins . In 2006 the album was re-released through Southern Lord Records with bonus material. The Melvins covered the theme song for an EP that was created during one of the peel sessions .
style
According to Eduardo Rivadavia of Allmusic , the band was initially a punk band that was influenced by hardcore punk bands like Black Flag and Bad Brains . With the growing popularity of Thrash Metal in the San Francisco Bay Area , the group has mixed these styles. According to Uwe Schnädelbach from Metal Hammer, the band on Circus of Chaos play an original mixture of punk, metal and psychedelic rock . Holger Stratmann noted in the same issue that the band on the album, in contrast to their label colleagues Sacrilege BC, tended more towards hardcore punk and a metal fan might feel disappointed with the album. In addition, the songs are not that fast, so that crossover fans could be disappointed. It also becomes clear “that the four musicians understand something of their craft and don't just jump on the thrashcore / crossover bandwagon”.
