history

Coalville was founded in 1859 by William Henderson Smith. It used to be called Calk Creek . Coalville is a place with a rich settler past. Like many cities and towns, the country was first colonized by the Mormons . William H. Smith crossed the area with goods and seeds. He lost some wheat from the wagons. When he found on the way back that the wheat had grown very well without help, he decided it was a good place to settle. He convinced four families to go with him to Calk Creek in the spring of 1859 to settle. In 1860 there were already 15 families living in Calk Creek.
