Codename: Linux (original title The Code ) is a 2001, 52-minute documentary film about the history of GNU / Linux , free software and the open source movement. Hannu Puttonen directed this Finnish-French production .

The documentary shows interviews with Linus Torvalds , Richard Stallman , Eric S. Raymond , Alan Cox , Miguel de Icaza , Theodore Ts'o , David S. Miller , Ari Lemmke and many more. The documentation also contains a chronological history of the development of Unix and Linux. Included is the Free Software Song (with translation as subtitle), which was published under the GNU Free Documentation License .

The documentary was shown on arte on German television . The film is only available on DVD in English (also without German subtitles), but with bonus material, including some pieces of music which can only be heard in extracts in the documentation.
