Codex Mariendalensis
The Codex Mariendalensis is a manuscript of the Yolanda epic from the 14th century. In the meantime it was thought to be lost, but was rediscovered in 1999 by Guy Berg in the library of Ansemburg Castle (today the municipality of Tuntange , Grand Duchy of Luxembourg).
It is one of the few literary testimonies in Middle High German from the Moselle Franconian area. In Luxembourg , brother Hermann von Veldenz's pious story about the Vianden count's daughter and nun Yolanda von Vianden is often declared an ancient testimony to the Luxembourg language and national identity. The font was acquired by the State of Luxembourg after ten years, which Romain Hilgert believed was overpriced, from the Count of Ansemburg and his heirs. The manuscript is now in the Bibliothèque nationale de Luxembourg under the signature Ms 860.
After the project of a critical text edition failed due to differences of opinion among the authors, the evaluation of the epic was entrusted to the University of Trier . The old Germanist Claudine Moulin has now edited a faithful reproduction in the series of the Institut Grand-Ducal-Leo according to scientific standards. This is the first time that the original text is available to the public.
